Asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally occuring mineral and was mined and imported/exported all over the world, especially into the UK for over 100 years. Asbestos is a wonder material and is well known for its properties and resiliance in that it is almost completely fireproof, an excellent electrical insulator and is resistant to attack from almost everything such as acid, weather etc. During this time there have been many uses and products due to the versatility of the material and it is therefore, found in many areas within buildings all over the world.
Unfortunately however, this wonder material has a darker side and has been found to be a class 1 carcinogen if inhaled so damaged products and loose insulation can pose a serious health risk. Therefore, asbestos was completely banned from import and manufacturing in 1999 in th UK. Any works on asbestos materials insitu or that may affect asbestos materials are heavily regulated and governed all over the world and should only be carried out by a specialist company.
